An emergency general house meeting of the National House of Chiefs held on Thursday, 20th May, 2021 with the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor on the pressing issue of Illegal Mining (Galamsey) in the country. The meeting was graced with the presence of the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs and Member of Parliament for Ahanta West Constituency, Hon. Ebenezer Kojo Kum and the technical staff of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
The Lands and Natural Resources minister indicated that activities of Small Scale mining had left considerable damage to the lands, river and other natural resources in their operational areas. Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor mentioned that as part of the ministry’s effort to protect the environment, 11th June, 2021 has been scheduled to plant trees across the country mostly galamsey affected areas in an exercise entitled Green Ghana Project. To this end, the President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, Sefwi Anhwiasohene promised to support the ministry with 3,000 seedlings as part of his contribution to support the project.
The House resolved that it was about time government placed a ban on mining activities for a period of 2 years in order to fashion out policies that will regulate the activities of small scale mining in the country.
